Key Claims

Robert Agnew expanded strain theory by identifying three major categories of strain: failure to achieve positively valued goals, removal of positively valued stimuli, and confrontation with noxious stimuli. These strains produce negative emotions (notably anger), leading to criminal coping when legitimate coping resources are absent.
