Beginning with research on African colonial economies at Columbia University, Wallerstein proposed world-systems analysis as a way past the limits of state-level development models. In 1976 he founded the Fernand Braudel Center at Binghamton University and built it into a research program, completing The Modern World-System in four volumes (1974–2011).
